I love you, Gertrūda

They say knitting reduces anxiety and increases happiness hormones - dopamine, serotonin, and saying "I love you" to yourself daily increases self-compassion.

"I love you, Gertrūda" is a durational performance: since 2021, I have knitted the same scarf, every day, with my own name written on it. The project continues until the scarves are sold in the art market as art objects.

The work lives in thick green lines between self-obsession and self-hate, devotion and yearning, sloppiness and commitment, performance and authenticity. It's about craving validation - from a lover, from the art world - and how not getting it humiliates harder than any slap could.

Durational performance has a lot in common with personal development: routine, repetition, ritual, consistency, commitment. I use Zeitgeisty wellness language, craft, and endless longing as material. As part of the performance, I post a TikTok daily - reflecting on the performativity of personal development online.

WHO IS GERTRŪDA GILYTĖ?
Gertrūda Gilytė is a Lithuanian artist, working with personal development as both practice and performance, pushing self-soothing rituals to a campy, precarious extreme - more relentless, more visible, more obsessive. She uses Zeitgeisty rituals of self-soothing - manifestation, knitting, bouldering - each standing in for belief, devotion, and risk. The relentless documentation mirrors self-improvement culture, where repetition signals dedication and visibility equals success.
